It was a mixture of shock and outrage that spurred Mary Bentley into action when she learned her son Jacob’s clinic, a lifeline for their family, would cease almost all outpatient services.
Jacob, 26, who has autism and a history of auditory hallucinations, has been a patient of Lee Specialty Clinic since he was 16 years old. Now, in response to state funding cuts, the clinic — which provides health and dental care for people with intellectual disabilities — has said it will stop providing most outpatient services, discharging nearly 1,300 patients, including Jacob, virtually overnight.
