Families plan Frankfort rally to save specialty clinic for adults needing special care (WHAS11)

'Find the money!' Parents upset over cuts at autism clinic, as lawmakers point fingers (WHAS11)

Staff say despite the risk of patients biting them, they want to keep their jobs and work through a two-year waitlist of adults with intellectual disabilities.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sondra Adkins is willing to take a risk every day she goes to work at a specialty clinic for adults with intellectual disabilities. But the staff is being laid off following reductions in the state budget.

“I don’t think about the patient going in to grab my hair. Or bite me. Those are things you, unfortunately, learn with experience,” Adkins said.

Families are now planning a rally in Frankfort to keep the Lee Specialty Clinic open. Over a hundred say they’ll attend.

“Please don’t leave us,” 32-year-old patient Taylor Daily told the nurses outside the clinic. “We love you here.”

As an adult, the autistic woman couldn’t get a dentist or primary healthcare, her guardian and mother told us.

“They refused her care, because they can’t manage her,” Leah Wright said. “They wanted to sedate her.”

  1. We HAVE TO SAVE the Lee Specialty Clinic. It’s a one stop shop for all the kids and adults with disabilities. If not, most of these patients will never receive the help or care they need. Cuts can be made elsewhere but NOT medical care. My neice Meaghan is devadted. She cries and has outbursts not knowing what’s going to happen. That is her SAFE PLACE. The Dr and nurses and all the specialist know how to treat these individuals and Noone will be able to know how to treat them. SAVE LEE SPECIALTY CLINIC!!!!
