Kentucky’s governor said he’s going to use money slotted for the Capitol annex renovation to help save a clinic at risk of losing millions in funding.
Lee Specialty Clinic has been at the center of a funding fight.
The Louisville clinic, which serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is losing $4.5 million after the GOP-controlled General Assembly reduced the budget for the Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental, and Intellectual Disabilities by 4% for the upcoming fiscal year.
According to the clinic, that would result in cutting the staff by 80%.
Public outcry followed to get lawmakers to find funding to keep it going, including hundreds showing up in Frankfort to rally.
On Thursday, Gov. Andy Beshear addressed the matter in his Team Kentucky update.
He said he has the money to save the clinic — for now.
He called it a band-aid solution to cover that $4.5 million for the next year, and it involves money set aside for the yearslong renovation of Kentucky’s Capitol building.
