My daughter, Ashley, has severe autism, epilepsy and intellectual disability. She has Medicaid and went to the Lee Clinic for Dental, Medical, Speech therapy, Occupational therapy.
Psychiatrics, OBGYN and more.
She is somewhat verbal but still has a challenge in having conversations or telling us when she hurts and where.
She went through some physical issues that were hard me for to figure out and she communicated with aggression since she could not find the words.
At one of her dental visits while at the Lee Clinic she began having issues and shoved the dental assistant. He did not say a word, did not react and was able to work with her to complete her appointment.
She is not a child. She is 29 years old. If a grown adult put their hands on a “regular” dentist, I fear he would call the police. They would not understand how to work with our special needs adult children.
A couple years ago Ashley pushed me at home and I fell and cut open my head which required stitches.
The Lee Clinic staff has been working with her and she is not having aggression now.
Her doctor and speech therapist were able to get her a communication device.
Her speech and occupational therapist has worked with her on learning to communicate when she is hurting and where so she does not act out to communicate.
Her psychiatrist has also worked on helping with this.
Her medical doctor at Lee is amazing and has helped in so many ways. She even gave me her cell phone number.
